Counter Top

Counter Top

One of the biggest decisions when remodeling a kitchen is the counter top. Though most other elements are important, the counter will be something that has to look good but also has to be versatile. There are many companies that have a lot to offer. Sometimes it comes down to price, but if price is not a problem, there are some great modifications that make choosing the right counter material easier than ever. You have to have something you love to look at, but you also want something that is in line with your kitchen and cooking habits.

The counter top in my kitchen is fine, but I did not install it. It was here when I moved in. It is modern and looks good, but it was not very expensive. It is showing some signs of wear, and if this were my house, I would have replaced it by now. It is great in the sense that it cleans up well and requires no special care, but the small dings that inevitably happen are showing more than they should. I would have chosen something more durable for the kitchen if I had the choice.

If you do a lot of cooking, you want a counter top that can take a knife hit or two. Though it is smart to use a cutting board to cut anything in the kitchen, there are times when the counter top must do. There are some that come with a built in cutting board, but these are harder to clean than the portable ones. Anyone who does a lot of chopping will love it though. The ideal countertop will take a nick or two from a knife without showing any wear though, as the cutting board is not always an option.

When choosing the ideal counter top, it’s good to remember that some have special cleaning instructions that may become tiresome in the future. Marble looks amazing, but there are special things that you have to do to care for it. Unless it has a protective covering, it won’t tolerate most hard cleaning products and cannot be scrapped very often. It is stone, but it is also delicate stone, if that makes any sense. If you don’t have time to give marble counter top the tender loving care that it needs, you might want to go with something else. Granite is a great looking substitute if you love the look of stone.
